Are the Holiday's Stressful?
Today the wonderful & amazing Ingrid Nilsen shares 5 helpful tips to a STRESS FREE holiday season! Many of you tell me that this time of year is a really hard, and I hope that you find her tips helpful!
5 tips to relieve the stress:
1) Getting organized! Having a plan and staying organized can help make everything feel more manageable.
2) Peppermint Oil! It can be a great stress reliever and by using the roller ball that Ingrid talks about can make it easy to bring with you so you are prepared no matter when the stress strikes!
3) Be kind to yourself and others! This could be volunteering, or doing something simple and kind for someone you love. Whatever it is, I always find that I get just as much (if not more) out of helping and showing love to others.
4) Disconnecting! Give yourself some time offline! Ingrid recommends either in the morning or night (to start) and taking an hour or two offline. That way you can focus on those around you and what you are doing instead of zoning out online.
5) Reconnecting! Focusing on your relationships and spending some quality time with those who are closest to you can mean so much more when you are present and in the moment. Taking some time to spend real time with those you love and who love you, can make all the difference. There really isn't any substitute for a hug in real life. xox

Today I talk with you about psychosis. What is it and what does it look and feel like to those who suffer. Since there is so much information to cover about this topic, I only go over the different types of psychosis and what those types look like.
There are 5 types of psychosis that are talked about in the DSM 5. They are as follows:
1. Delusions: there are fixed beliefs that cannot be changed even when there is comforting evidence. There are many types of delusions, but the most common types are persecutory and grandiose.
2. Hallucinations: these are things that we perceive, that have no real external stimuli. These can be things we see, hear, feel, taste, etc. Auditory hallucinations (hearing things that are not there) is the most common.
3. Disorganized Thinking: This is noticed through someone's speech. Due to their disorganized thinking, they cannot speak coherently. It can sound like they are hopping from one topic to another without any connection to what you are talking about. When I worked in the hospital we would call this "word salad" because it was all tossed together without any clear connection.
4. Grossly disorganized or abnormal motor behavior: They can struggle with goal oriented behavior, be oddly silly or childlike, or extremely agitated for no clear reason. This can make everyday activities very difficult because there are organized steps we have to take to get things accomplished (ie. go to the grocery store for food to make a sandwich, get home, make sandwich, eat it, and clean up). Catatonia is also mentioned under this type and this is when we have a lack of response to stimuli. We may not move at all and some even hold poses for a long period of time. Can also be mute or stare for long periods of time.
5. There are the most common, however, they are the least noticeable. Negative symptoms are most commonly a) diminished emotional expression or blunted affect. b) avolition, which is when we don't show any desire to do anything of purpose. There are many other types of negative symptoms, but those are the most common.
Many disorders have psychotic features as a subtype of the diagnosis and there are many psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, brief psychotic disorder etc. If you or someone you know is struggling with psychosis please get help. See a psychiatrist asap! The sooner we stop or diminish the psychosis the better chances we have of our brain healing from it. So please share this video! Please reach out! The more we know the better!

What is codependency and why do people talk so poorly about it? Well I looked up the definition of codependency and it states that it is:
Codependent relationships are a type of dysfunctional helping relationship where one person supports or enables another person's addiction, poor mental health, immaturity, irresponsibility, or under-achievement. Among the core characteristics of codependency, the most common theme is an excessive reliance on other people for approval and identity.
Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/HUGM/
Based on that definition you can see why codependency isn't something we want in our lives. However, we find that many relationships do have some form of codependency in them. We all want to be accepted and loved by those we are in relationship with, so we may do things to help make their lives easier. Hell, I do a lot of things to help Sean out, so I am sure we are all doing this in one way or another. It doesn't mean your relationship is doomed or anything, it just means that we may need to change a few things to make sure it is even more healthy and happy.
So what can you do? Well for starters simply notice if there are things that you do to help your partner engage in unhealthy behavior. Do they overeat and you make them as much food as they want? Do they drink a lot? Or maybe they have a shopping problem. Whatever it may be, we may be doing things to help them continue using these unhealthy coping skills.
After we have noticed what behaviors we are enabling, we should look into therapy. There are also group therapy options like codependents anonymous you can find that are free and all over the world. Most of us will be able to change some of our behavior little by little and make our relationships healthier and happier. So don't feel like this is telling you that you have to break up with them. The problem isn't them, it's how you are interacting with them. So we have to work on ourselves first. I hope you found this helpful!! Please share and +1!

Quiet Borderline! What is it? Mental Health Help with Kati Morton

Now BEFORE you watch this, please check out my first video about Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPopjuKuweg&list;=PL_loxoCVsWqwRYQO-u0iW_bjL_DpWBbd8
That will help you better understand what BPD is so that you can then add on the idea of "quiet borderline" and what that may look like and feel like.
So the traditional way that we see and experience BPD is a very outward expressing or anger out way. We can be very volatile in our relationships and even struggle with suicidality. We worry a lot about others leaving us and almost cannot trust them to stay! So we can get very upset and hurt. We express this outwardly and it can be very hard on us and those who we are in relationship with.
However, there are many of us who may relate to the symptoms of BPD, but do not lash out or express any emotion outwardly. We may instead, express it inward, and take it out on ourselves solely. Obviously, everyone expresses their diagnosis differently, so you may identify with all or none of this. Just keep in mind that this is why we need to see a professional and get a proper diagnosis before we jump to any conclusions.
Those of us with a "quiet borderline" may have really needed a better or more nurturing parent. This can lead us to feeling like we don't really exist or that what we need and want is not acceptable. Another portion of BPD that could be seen as a "quiet borderline" trait are the areas of impulsivity. We may binge eat or use drugs or alcohol to cope, both of which are things that do to harm ourselves and could be done in private without sharing these struggles with anyone. So you can see how it can differ person to person, and some of us may not have the traditional BPD experience.
Please keep in mind that no matter what diagnosis we are given, we still need to ask questions and express your own feelings and symptoms so that our treatment team can better understand what we are going through, and make sure we are getting the proper support!
YOU CAN RECOVER!! REMEMBER THAT!

Today I talk to you about panic attacks. What are they and what do they feel like? Well panic attacks can feel like different things to different people but some of the most common sensations are:
-Heart palpitations
-Feeling like you are being smothered/Not able to catch your breath
-Sweaty palms
-Feel cold or hot all of a sudden
-Stomach aches or other gastrointestinal issues
Panic attacks happen to roughly 11-12% of people in the United States alone, so we know that they are happening to a lot of people. If you feel that you have been struggling with panic attacks please talk to your doctor! The sooner we being getting help for these, the less likely it is that you will have more. So talk to your doctor or therapist as soon as possible! You don't have to suffer alone!

Today I talk about PTSD. What it is and what our treatment options are.
PTSD is something that can be diagnosed to anyone over the age of 6, and all that needs to happen is that we have to have been in a situation that made us feel like our life was in danger. That's it! So if someone tells you that only veterans have PTSD, show them this video and tell them that they are an idiot. ;)
There are a ton of diagnostic criteria for PTSD, and I will touch on them all. However, due to the time constraints, if you want more info on them, you can search them individually.
1: You must have exposure to trauma
2: Flashbacks and other intrusive symptoms
3: Avoidance of stimuli
4: Cognitive struggles. When you struggle to remember the specifics of the event
5: It must last for at least one month, and it gets worse over time. Those with PTSD do not get better as time passes! That is very important to note! It actually gets worse for them, and the flashbacks or dissociations become more and more frequent.
Treatment options are:
CBT (trauma focused): is best and what they do is gradually expose you to triggers and then help you calm down from it. Sort of like a progressive exposure therapy, while helping you to see that these triggering things are no longer a threat to you.
Family Therapy: This is SO IMPORTANT! Things that happen to us effect those around us too! It can be so helpful to have a safe place to communicate about what we are going through and help bring us closer together.
Medication: Many people who have PTSD also find themselves struggling with anxiety and depression. Therefore, medication has been found to be very helpful for for those who are struggling. If you are interested in looking into that further, please contact your doctor.
EMDR: This stands for Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing. You follow someones finger, light or even a buzzer in each hand. This helps our brain reprocess the traumatic information and help us more quickly heal from it.
Bottom line, please reach out for help if you feel you may be suffering from PTSD. Like I said, it only get worse over time, and there are amazing treatment options out there to help us heal and live the life we want and deserve! xox

Today's mental health topic: 5 steps to creating and maintaining healthy boundaries. I have heard from a lot of you that you struggle to speak up and assert your boundaries and if you do, you immediately feel guilty and bad about doing so. I know that creating boundaries can be really hard, but if you take your time with each of these steps you will have healthier and happier relationships than ever before.
1. Observe. Notice when certain things really upset you or you feel like someone is just being too invasive. What you are feeling is your own body’s natural set of boundaries. We all feel this whether we notice or not, and that’s why it’s important to take some time and observe it.
2. Be clear and assertive. Now that we know what our natural boundaries are, we have to let people know. This doesn’t mean we have to be mean or rude, just straight forward and to the point. That way they will know what’s okay and what’s not okay.
3. Give yourself permission. This will be the hardest for many of you, but the most important at maintaining our healthy boundaries. We often feel guilty or rude when we set up boundaries, but know that it’s all in the best interest of the relationship. By setting up healthy boundaries we can stop the passive aggressive way of getting our needs met, and also prevent other unnecessary fights. Truthfully, by setting boundaries we are actually helping you and the other people you are in relationship with.
4. Get outside support! There are going to be times when we need that extra push to keep at it or communicate clearly and not be passive. It’s important for us to have other people in our lives who are there for support. This could be a good friend, therapist or support group. Anyone who isn’t in the relationship you are working on will do. They can offer there support and advice when we need it.
5. Self care! As always we have to take care of ourselves in order to do any of this hard work. So make sure you are setting aside time for yourself so that you have the energy to create and maintain these new healthy boundaries.

Today I sit down with Paul Gilmartin and discuss group therapy and other meetings that can help with your recovery process. I know many of you have asked me what group therapy is like or why you should look into one, and Paul shares his experience with group therapy and how it has helped him.
Joining a group can be very difficult and scary, but so powerful. It can help for us to identify with other people and know we are not alone, as well as feel hopeful about our future. Know that it’s normal to not want to talk at first and feel like an outsider, or that you don’t have anything to say. Know that you don’t have to talk at first, and in all honesty, don’t ever have to speak if you don’t want to. But by taking that risk, speaking up and sharing your story you can not only help others but also help you process through what you are working on and gain some powerful insight. You know how I always say that the more we talk about something the less power it has over us, well that applies to group. By sharing your story, you are telling yourself that it’s okay to feel the way you feel and to have that experience. This can help you take that next step in your recovery process and get some extra support along the way.
Just like one-on-one therapy, you need to find the right fit. Some meetings can be toxic and/or bad for you. So know that you may have to hop around to a few until you find a good fit for you. A great tip from Paul: a good sign that a group is good and healthy is when most of the people in the group have lives that are working. I hope you found Paul’s experience helpful, and please check out his podcast! I will be doing more videos on group therapy in the future, so stay tuned for that as well.

HATRED OF SOUND! Misophonia with Kati Morton

Misophonia. Is it real? If so, what is it? Is it the Hatred of Sound? Why does it cause a fight or flight response?
Many of you have reached out about this and to be honest, I had just had a friend of mine ask me if I had treated anyone with it.
Misophonia is not a mental disorder and is not found in the DSM. Misophonia is defined as the hatred of sound. People who struggle with this find everyday annoying sounds (like smacking gum, dragging feet, clicking pens, etc) so upsetting that it can send them into a rage. They will hit people, scream, run away and lash out at those making the sound! What we know so far about this issue is that some noises (there is a list on misophonia.com) are so upsetting to people with misophonia that they go into "fight or flight" mode in their brain. They feel so scared/upset by these noises that they feel they must make them stop at any cost.
Since we don't know that much about this yet, and there aren't any tried and true treatment methods they talk mostly about behavioral techniques working. Such as bringing headphones or earplugs with you everywhere and avoiding situations with those noises as much as possible. They also talked about how helpful it can be to tell those close to us about it so that they can be more aware of themselves and the noises they make. If you have any other information or experience with this, please share below! Just because something isn't that well known or isn't in the DSM doesn't mean that it doesn't exist or isn't an issue. The more we share and learn from each other the better! xoxo
